Celebrities pay tribute to Michael Jackson

As soon as reports started emerging that Michael Jackson had suffered a fatal heart attack, fellow celebrities and fans started to pay tribute to the King of Pop on Twitter.

Lindsay Lohan wrote "RIP Michael Jackson . My love and prayers go out to the Jackson family...'you are not alone'."

Her on-off girlfriend DJ Samantha Ronson meanwhile said: "His music is just as relevant now as it was the day they pressed record, I'm sure it will remain so for generations to come. RIP Mr Jackson."

Mariah Carey was devastated by the news. She wrote: "I am heartbroken. My prayers go out to the Jackson family,and my heart goes out to his children

"Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world & the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times & to call him my friend.

"No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever."

US reality star Kim Kardashian had known Jacko her entire life. She wrote: "I'm looking at pictures of my 14th bday party at Neverland Ranch, these memories will last forever!"

Chris Moyles said: "Michael Jackson was to me what I imagine Elvis was to another generation. I bought his songs and I saw him live. His death is very sad."

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke wrote: "May MJ Rest in peace. Sometimes God need's to call his angels home. May His music live on..."

Actress Demi Moore wrote on her Twitter site: "I am greatly saddened for the loss of both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Especially for their children!"

Husband Ashton Kutcher reacted like most fans, initially stunned, baffled and looking for confirmation of the early news reports that were coming out.

"Michael Jackson had a heart attack?" he asked on his Twitter page, before updating: "Mike Jackson passed away today from a heart attack. That's what tmz said. Wow"

He later wrote: "Pray for his kids."

TV presenter Alexa Chung said she actually found out about his death via Twitter. She said: "V strange to discover MJ has died via twitter. How modern. Sang 'heal the world' in his honour."

Teen singer Miley Cyrus wrote: "Michael Jackson was my inspiration. love and blessings."

Stephen Fry was shocked at the news. "Goodness. Michael Jackson. Poor old soul. Oh dear."

Pink said: "Michael Jackson was one of the best that ever did it. RIP

And rapper MC Hammer also paid tribute, saying: "I will be mourning my friend, brother, mentor and inspiration... He gave me and my family hope. I would never have been without him."

Musician Wyclef Jean wrote: "he lives forever in my heart i will never forget the day he came to see me in the studio and i played him music... R i p to Michael Jackson my music god ... Some lost Elvis Presley and we lost Michael Jackson... I cried today because Michael Jackson was a Father that we all lost!"

P Diddy commented: "Michael Jackson showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him."

Usher wrote: "Again.. my heart goes out to the King of Pop and his family."

Princess of pop Britney Spears wrote: "He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed."

Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote: "We lost a great entertainer and a pop icon. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michael Jackson's family, friends and fans."

Katy Perry simply wrote: "Oh my God."

Foreign Secretary David Miliband also marked Jackson's death on Twitter, commenting: "Never has one soared so high and yet dived so low. RIP Michael."

The death of one of the world’s greatest pop stars is having a global impact, but social media brings into sharp focus the scale of the world’s shock and sadness. Previously, we might have learned of a pop star’s passing via TV, or a friend or coworker: now knowledge is immediate, and mourning has become more public than private: a collective expression of loss.

According to the Twitter tracking tool Twist (incidentally, Twitter appears to be straining under the weight of the tributes to the star), 22.61% of Tweets currently contain the phrase “Michael Jackson”. “MJ”, meanwhile, accounts for 9% of Tweets right now. More than 25% contain the name “Michael”. In total, at least 30% of Tweets are remarking upon the star’s tragic passing, and that’s likely an underestimate.

Social media’s role in rapidly distributing globally-significant news like this will likely be analysed in great depth over the coming weeks. It’s notable that despite early news reports of Michael’s passing on blogs, the timing of the tributes coincided with confirmation by the LA Times – for the most critical information, it seems, we continue to trust mainstream news the most.

MJ FAMILY ACQUAINTANCE SPEAKS OUT AT HOSPITAL

Brian Oxman, who's acted as an attorney for the Jackson family at various times, responded to questions about whether medications might have played a role in Michael Jackson's death.
"I have warned of the use of medications, in Michael's case I said that if this is going to be the result of the tragedy that we're now seeing that I was going to speak up loud and clear," Oxman said outside the hospital where doctors unsuccessfully tried to revive Jackson on Thursday afternoon.
Oxman, who said he had visited with the Jackson family inside the medical center, described the scene inside the hospital as "chaotic for a time and then it was absolute silence. And no one will say what has happened, I've been asked not to say what has happened. I only know that I am heartbroken."

Death spurs Michael Jackson album sales

In death, Michael Jackson is enjoying a commercial renaissance that had eluded him for years.

The self-proclaimed "king of pop" who died suddenly on Thursday occupied the top 15 slots on online retailer Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.O) best-selling albums within hours.

The No. 1 disc, not surprisingly, was the 25th anniversary reissue of his 1982 blockbuster "Thriller," the biggest selling album in history with estimated worldwide sales of almost 50 million copies. Three different configurations of "Thriller" came in at number 12, 13, and 14.

Second place went to 1979's "Off the Wall," which was followed by 1987's "Bad." Both were also massive sellers upon their initial release. His last studio album, 2001's "Invincible," came in at a more modest No. 10.

The other albums on the list were mostly compilations either of his solo work or his hits with the Jackson 5.

Jackson's Sony Music label, a unit of Sony Corp (6758.T) (SNE.N), said he sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, and released 13 No. 1 singles.

"His artistry and magnetism changed the music landscape forever," Sony Corp Chairman, CEO and President Sir Howard Stringer said in a statement. "We have been profoundly affected by his originality, creativity and amazing body of work."

Michael Jackson, one of the biggest pop icons in modern history, haspassed away at the age of 50. Although Jackson’s music career hit its peak in the 80’s, his influence on music, and especially music videos, has persisted throughout.

And Jackson’s YouTube channel – which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Thriller– includes all of his most popular videos, many of which have been viewed tens of millions of times.

Like comedian George Carlin, who passed away last year, we thought the best way to pay tribute to The King of Pop would be through sharing his work.
